Master Debating
Debatra is where great discussions happen. This guide will show you how everything works.
How Debates Work
Every debate has two simple phases to make sure the best arguments rise to the top.
Facts Over Likes
We replace social media echo chambers with a simple voting system. You don't just vote for what you like—you vote for arguments that make sense and use good evidence.
The Construction
Phase 1: Build the case. Submit stances, challenge arguments, and audit evidence. This is where the work is done.
The Consensus
Phase 2: Pass the verdict. No new arguments are allowed. The community votes on the best overall stances.
Creating a Debate
A great debate starts with a clear question. Here is how you create one.
Precision Topics
Avoid broad questions. 'Should we explore space?' is vague. 'Should Mars colonization be prioritized over Lunar bases by 2035?' is a sharp Arena topic.
The Initial Stance
When you create a debate, you define its starting point. Use this to set a high quality bar for the participants who will follow.
Phase Duration
Debates have a fixed timeline. Phase 1 runs for strictly 48 hours for debate construction, followed by 24 hours of Phase 2 community voting. Total duration: 72 hours.
Creation Tips
Select the most accurate category to ensure the right experts find your debate.
Avoid biased wording in the title. Let the stances argue the bias.
Structure your initial post with clear paragraphs. Include sources if the debate relies on facts and data.
How to Vote
Phase 1 is where you vote on the quality of arguments. Every vote helps determine who wins the debate.
Strong Evidence
Backed by verifiable facts, data, or credible primary sources.
Convincing
Persuasive reasoning that effectively addresses the core conflict.
Well Structured
Organized, logical flow that makes the case easy to digest.
Logical Consistency
Arguments are valid and free from contradictions or fallacies.
Needs Improvement
Significantly flawed, misleading, or ignores established evidence.
Sway
If an argument actually changed your mind, mark it as a Sway. This is the highest honor you can give an argument.
The 3-Category Verdict
Phase 2 is where the community casts their final judgment on the best individual stances.
Best Overall Argument
The stance that was most compelling, well-argued, and addressed the heart of the debate most effectively.
Most Logical
The stance that demonstrated superior logical consistency, avoiding fallacies and contradictions.
Best Use of Evidence
The most factual argument that leveraged credible sources to anchor its claims.
Verdict Rules
Vote with Integrity
Phase 2 requires you to select the stances that genuinely won the debate. While no reasoning is required, the community relies on your honest judgment.
The Winner Multiplier
The stances that win these categories earn a massive multiplier on their Phase 1 reputation gains.
How to Argue Better
Good arguments are the key to winning. Here is how you can improve yours.
Advanced Tactics
The Steelman
Address the strongest version of your opponent's argument. If you can dismantle their best points, your credibility skyrockets.
Evidence Anchoring
Link to primary data, studies, or direct quotes. Opinion pieces are weak; raw evidence is bulletproof.
Address the Counter
In your own stance, predict the strongest counter-argument and address it. This leaves no easy targets for 'Needs Improvement' votes.
Fallacy Watchlist
The Strawman
Misrepresenting someone's argument to make it easier to attack. This is heavily penalized in the Audit.
Ad Hominem
Attacking the person instead of the argument. Instant reputation loss.
False Dilemma
Claiming only two choices exist when there are many. Avoid this by exploring nuance.
